Ph.D. student position (f/m/d – paid according to TV-L)

  • Uniklinikum Würzburg - Institut für Experimentelle Biomedizin
  • 01.07.2025
  • Vollzeit
  • befristet mit Möglichkeit auf Verlängerung

Application deadline: 28/05/2025

The position is embedded in the Institute of Experimental Biomedicine and linked to the DFG-funded project “Development of photoswitchable anticoagulants for local modulation of thrombosis and hemostasis”.
In our laboratory, we study platelets and their precursors, megakaryocytes, in health and under diseased conditions. We utilize mouse genetics, disease models, advanced imaging techniques and clinical research expertise to study how the platelet-megakaryocyte axis drives thrombo-inflammation. Specifically, we are interested in translational research that deciphers molecular mechanisms of driving thrombo-inflammation in various disease settings with the aim to develop novel treatment concepts for these disorders.

This project follows an interdisciplinary approach in close collaboration with the group of Prof. Decker at the Institute for Pharmacy and Food Chemistry of the University of Würzburg to develop novel anticoagulants which can be modulated by light. We ultimately aim to evaluate novel photoswitchable compounds as potential drug candidates and to investigate the interplay between platelets and the coagulation system to ensure hemostasis while preventing thrombosis.

Wir bieten

We offer a stimulating atmosphere, excellent infrastructure, and the possibility to work on a highly innovative, interdisciplinary project in the excellent scientific environment of the Institute of Experimental Biomedicine I, University Hospital and Rudolf-Virchow-Center for top-level basic, translational as well as clinical research.

Successful PhD applicants will have the opportunity to enroll to an international graduate program at the Graduate School of Life Sciences in Würzburg. The position is available immediately. Salary is based on TV-L.

Ihr Aufgabengebiet

The PhD student will work on projects combining characterization of novel photoswitchable anticoagulants using platelet/coagulation assays with microfluidic assays, advanced imaging techniques (intravital multiphoton, super-resolution) and mouse models of thrombo-inflammatory diseases. Besides microscopy, genetically modified mice, cell biological, biochemical and molecular biology approaches will be part of the projects. The aim is to provide new insights into pathomechanisms and to explore experimental targeting.

Ihr Profil

  • University degree (Diploma, MSc, or equivalent) in Life Sciences, such as Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Pharmacy.
  • Experience with mouse handling and in vivo and in vitro experimental techniques relevant to this field is preferable.
  • Strong interest in the field of experimental platelet research with a focus on coagulation, cardiovascular biology and/or in vivo imaging.
  • Team player with self-initiative, creativity and an independent and responsible work ethic.
  • Highly proficient in spoken and written English as well as computer literacy.

Application Process

Interested candidates are invited to submit their completed application form, a single page motivation letter, CV including past research experience, list of publications, transcript of records, and an English proficiency certificate until May 28, 2025.
