With over 150 doctors, anesthesiology is one of the clinic's largest specialist areas. We attach great importance to research and offer a wide range of opportunities. In connection with the cooperation in one of the numerous research and working groups, we also closely cooperate with the German Institute of Human Nutrition, who investigates the impact of nutrition on age-associated disease development. In this particular project the requirement of micronutrient supplementation in critically ill patients. Since it is postulated that severe disease is accompanied by a severe loss of micronutrients or many patients arrive in a clinical setting with a micronutrient deficiency, the effect of supplementation on clinical outcomes will be tested together with the project partners. This particular project aims to develop more reliable methods to establish the micronutrient status.
The University Hospital Würzburg and the German Institute of Human Nutrition are offering an intensive and structured supervision and, together, with the University of Potsdam a PhD programme. Training and scientific development are ensured by including you into a team of nutritionists, biochemists and clinical working persons at the institute. Salary scale: Market competitive based on a 40hour week, depending on qualifications and experience. Successful candidates will receive an attractive base-salary in accordance with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, for 36 months. The exact (net) salary depends on the EU-defined country correction factor, and on local tax regulations (for additional information see EU MSCA website). Exact salary will be confirmed upon appointment.

Doctoral candidates will receive a living allowance of €4010/month (correction factor to be applied per country, and local employer’s contribut)

RF7: Personalization, adequate monitoring and guidance of micronutrient therapy in cardiac surgery patients

Enrolment in a Doctoral Program

Project description: The goal of the is project is to evaluate the feasibility of point-of-care measurements of inflammation in the clinical practice and to test in multicenter clinical trials (e.g. ACCURATE), whether the evaluation of a patient`s biological phenotype may be an innovative and reliable strategy to identify treatment responders.

Your main tasks and responsibilities in this project are:

• Determine the micronutrient status in clinical trials by analyzing the provided samples
• To compare the response of inflammation biomarkers between the treatment (e.g. vitamin C) and placebo groups for identification of treatment responders
• To investigate optimal timing of micronutrient therapy based on the inflammation biomarkers.
• Proof-of-concept studies for the methods in in clinical settings

We seek a highly motivated scientist with a MSc/Diploma in life sciences (e.g. biochemist, nutritionist, environmental sciences) or analytical chemistry or comparable. The applicant should have interest in analytical techniques and their application to clinical problems. We expect the applicant to have some experience in statistical data analysis and to be a highly-motivated, precise-working person with communication skills in English and ability to work in interdisciplinary collaboration and in a diverse research environment. The applicant will work in a team of highly motivated PhD candidates and scientists and the work will result in a PhD thesis.

We expect you to communicate intensively with our team at the University Hospital Würzburg, although your main working place will be at the German institute of Human Nutrition in Potsdam-Rehbrücke.

To be eligible for this position, applicants must meet the Marie Skłodowska-Curie admission requirements:

• You must not already hold a doctoral degree.
• You must comply with the MSCA mobility rule: you must not have resided in or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months during the three years immediately prior to recruitment.
